How to Separate Pitch Glue

Pitch comes from the sap of pine trees. When a pine tree is injured, it releases sticky sap to cover the wound in the tree. This accumulation of sap is pitch. Natural pitch contains many contaminants, such as insects, pieces of bark or dirt. To create pitch glue, you must separate these materials from the sap. Heating the sap is the best way to separate the unwanted ingredients from the pitch. After the ingredients separate, you can remove them from the pitch to make new glue.

Instructions

    • 1

Place the small pot on a fire or over the stove. Place the pitch pieces inside the pot.

    • 2

Heat the pitch until it melts all the way through. Allow the pitch to remain heated until all debris either settles to the bottom or rises to the top.

    • 3

Scoop out any debris from the top with a wooden spoon and discard.

    • 4

Remove the pitch from the pot with a ladle, taking care not to disturb the debris on the bottom. Place the pitch in a glass container, or another pot.

    • 5

Use the rock to grind one part plant fiber and one part charcoal for every five parts pitch. Mix these ingredients together to make a natural pitch glue that holds together for long periods.
