How to Identify Extinct Fish in Michigan From the DNR

The Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is a government agency committed to the conservation, protection, management, use and enjoyment of the state's natural and cultural resources for current and future generations. The Michigan division of the DNR is responsible for the stewardship of the state's natural resources and for the provision of outdoor recreational opportunities including fishing. Michigan waters include approximately 146 kinds of fish, ranging from small minnow species to giant sturgeon. Unfortunately, some species of fish in Michigan have become extinct over the years. The Endangered Species Program of the Michigan DNR maintains a list of endangered, threatened, probably extirpated, and extinct animal species in the state.
