How to Hunt Magpie

Magpies are a bird common throughout the northern hemisphere and are often considered pests. These birds are known to cause a considerable amount of damage to various crops, such as cherries, almonds, corn and peaches. Magpies also pick open wounds and scabs on the backs of livestock, often creating a much larger wound and causing it to become infected. If you are encountering issues with magpies and want to hunt them in order to control further damage, there are few things to keep in mind when hunting these birds.

Instructions

    • 1

Know the physical features of a magpie. Magpies are black and white in color and have a black or yellow beak. They can reach up to 17 inches in length. These birds also have a distinctive flute-like call.

    • 2

Know the magpie's natural habitat. Magpies generally dwell in open pastures and nest in tall trees. You will often find them around farmland, gardens, foothills, close to water, and even near airports and schools. Magpies also usually feed off of insects, animal roadkill, ripening fruits, nuts and grains.

Decide how you want to trap. There are a few ways of trapping magpie. One way is by using the Larsen method. This trap, which is a double cage trap with a flap door, allows the bird to be caught and released elsewhere unharmed. Another way of hunting magpies is by using distress CDs for effective shooting. This noise will attract magpies about half a mile away, which will make shooting a magpie easier. Be sure to use the CD sparingly while hunting, since the birds might begin to associate the distress calls with danger.
