Green Product Strategy
The aim of the company's Green Product Strategy is to minimize the ecological impact of the products throughout the whole value chain. The value chain covers three areas. "Resources" covers the physical nature of the products and includes using recycled material and keeping product weight low. "Human" refers to policies such as reducing heavy metal use and decreasing the noise of products. Finally, in "Energy," LG aims to reduce standby power and use renewable energy during production.
Green Management System
This section covers the organization and verification of LG's environmental policies. The company employs an "Eco Design Committee," which discusses the design and implementation of the green product strategies. This committee is split into subcommittees covering standardization, packaging, products and CO2. In terms of certification, LG Electronics complies with legal requirements and conducts its own inspection of vendors' and suppliers' green policies. The company chooses its partners in part based on these inspections and offers training programs to vendors and suppliers.
Green Manufacturing
LG Electronics has publicly announced its commitment to minimizing the resources and pollutants used in its manufacturing processes. Its goal is to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions by 75,000 tons by 2012 and by 150,000 tons by 2020. This is to be achieved in several ways. In terms of personnel, LG aims to secure talented individuals and increase training in manufacturing facilities. In terms of the manufacturing itself, emissions are tracked at each facility, and efforts to reduce emissions are conducted individually, taking into account the characteristics of each facility.
Green History
LG Electronics' green policy also contains a section on its history in this area. Its Environment Committee was first formed in 1992 and announced its Environmental Proclamation in 1994. More recent developments have been solar cell charging units, introduced in 2007, and the "Take-back" system for discarded and unused mobile phones. Many of the policies mentioned previously are new developments, such as greenhouse gas inventories and the Eco Strategy Team, which were established in 2008.
