How to Get Wild Honey

If, while in the outdoors, you notice a hole in a tree with bees flying in and out, you probably have stumbled upon a beehive and a promise of honey. This can be a happy discovery for someone who knows how to harvest the sweet treat from a nested beehive, but the task is not easy. You must know how to deal with potentially dangerous bees that are not inclined to give up what they've worked so hard for. But the reward for taking precautions and following the right steps can be very tasty.

Instructions

    • 1

Protect yourself by wearing a bee suit. A bee suit may consist of a one-piece suit or jacket and pants. It protects your whole body from harm. Slip on bee gloves or heavy duty gloves. Place a hat underneath the bee helmet (bee veil) to protect your head and face from any bee stings.

    • 2

Gather dry leaves to be placed at the base of the hive to create a smoky and bee-calming fire. The leaves are to be gathered prior to approaching the tree. Place the leaves in a stainless steel container and light them with a torch or lighter.

    • 3

Carry the container slowly and quietly toward the base of the tree once the leaves begin smoking.

    • 4

Fan the smoke into the hive entrance.

    • 5

Walk away from the tree and stand at a distance in a place allowing you to run if the bees swarm toward you.

    • 6

Cut into the hive using an axe after you have smoked the bees for about five minutes.

    • 7

Chop a piece of the hive, place it into a small saucepan and quickly run away.
