What Is a Dwarf Coconut Palm?

A dwarf coconut palm is a tiny palm tree that is, despite its height, capable of producing full-sized coconuts. Dwarf coconut palms, like taller coconut palms, belong to the species Cocos nucifera. There are many subspecies of tall coconut palms, but only a few varieties of dwarf coconut palms. While tall and dwarf coconut palm trees share many characteristics, their differences are more substantial than just height.
  1. Physical Characteristics

    • Typical tall palm trees can reach a height of 85 feet. Dwarf coconut palms, on the other hand, only reach 30 to 40 feet. In addition to the height difference, tall coconut palms can be distinguished from dwarf coconut palms by the presence of a round bowl at the base of the trunk. Tall coconut palms have this bowl, but dwarf varieties do not. The palm fronds of a tall coconut palm grow in a round shape, while dwarf coconut palm fronds form a wedge shape.

    Maturation/Reproduction

    • Dwarf coconut palm trees mature and begin producing coconuts in about three to four years, which is faster than any other coconut-producing palm. Dwarf coconut palms also self-pollinate. This means that there are fewer subspecies of dwarf coconut palms because the trees do not receive pollen from neighboring trees. Unlike most taller trees, which cross-pollinate and often produce new varietals, dwarf coconut palms all share a very similar genetic makeup.

    Coconuts

    • Dwarf coconut trees produce full-sized coconuts in great quantities, often producing more fruits per season than any other coconut palm variety. Most of the time, these coconuts are on the smaller side, however. There is less coconut meat in a dwarf coconut, but the water found in the center is sweeter than in almost any other variety. Coconuts develop approximately one year after flowering.

    Growing Conditions

    • Dwarf coconut palms are ideal for planting around homes and in parks because of their smaller size and, with it, more limited root structure. These palms prefer nutrient-rich moist soil and good drainage. If you want to plant a dwarf coconut palm in your yard, keep in mind dwarf palms are less resistant to winds than tall palms and choose a location accordingly. Provide a good quality fertilizer regularly, and protect seedlings from too much direct sunlight.
