How to Measure How Much Rain Falls

Measurement of rainfall dates back to ancient times and continues to be a wise practice for gardeners and others today. A rain gauge is the most common way to measure rainfall at home and even by the National Weather Service. A variety of rain gauges are available for purchase from hardware and discount stores. It's also possible to build a simplified rain gauge with a few materials.

Instructions

  1. Build a Simple Rain Gauge

    • 1

Place the ruler inside the container. Align the ruler with the bottom of the container with the increment lines facing outward. Carefully scale the outside of the container using the ruler lines as a guide.

    • 2

Wrap the wire or straightened coat hanger around the cylindrical glass container in a spiral. Start at the bottom with a full loop and continue to the top. At the top, leave enough wire to form a hook. This hook can be attached to a deck railing or other stable object to prevent the rain gauge from being blown away by wind.

    • 3

Secure the rain gauge in an open place where it will receive rain without interference from trees, shrubs, or eaves which may drip and lead to inaccurate measurements.

    • 4

Check your rain gauge daily or weekly. If desired, record the amount of rainfall and empty the container. Monthly or even yearly rainfall can be tabulated by keeping accurate records.
