How to Make a Snow Maze

After a heavy snow, and especially after a blizzard, a large backyard is the ideal place for a maze. The snow becomes the walls. The more snow on the ground, the higher the walls. A snow maze, no matter how big, is fun for children to run through. Dogs love snow mazes, as well. Build the walls taller than the dogs to dissuade them from jumping out of the maze.

Things You'll Need

  • Shovel or snowblower
  • 2 long sticks
  • Bright material, 2 colors

Instructions

    • 1

Create a path in the snow using your feet. Zigzag while walking to make twists and turns in the path. Stop after some distance, turn around and head to a random point along the path. Start a new path off of the first one. Keep walking, creating dead ends and curves.

    • 2

Shovel the path you made. Use a snowblower if you have one and the snow is not too deep. Pile the snow on both sides of the path to give the walls height. Do not pat down the snow because that will lower the height.

    • 3

Tie one piece of brightly colored material to the end of one of the sticks. Tie the second piece of material to the end of the second stick. These will serve as flags. Place one flag at the beginning of the maze and the other at the end of the maze. This gives the children something to look for if they become confused inside the maze.
