Things You'll Need
Instructions
Stand together with the rest of your group and talk calmly but loudly. Wave your arms around. This will show the bear that you are just humans, and the noise and crowd will discourage it from approaching.
Throw golf-ball-size stones at the bear's rump if it does not retreat. Throwing the stones will scare the bear but wont hurt it, which could cause it to become enraged and attack. Do not throw stones at the bear's face.
Fire typically scares off bears. Light a fire using your lighter and some dry wood or grass. You can either make torches or a large campfire.
Pour small pebbles into a hollowed out log or large branch. Hold either end closed and shake the pebbles in the log. This is effective to scare bears that may naturally encounter rattle snakes.
Beat on a tree with a heavy stick while yelling. This will create more noise and can further scare a bear that has already climbed up a tree. Continue for several minutes and then return to your camp to give the bear time to run away.
