How to Survive in a Dry Climate Zone

Living in an area with a dry climate often also means living in a hot climate. Deserts are among the most common dry climate areas. Because such areas are often sunny and hot, they require survival techniques different from those needed in moister climates. Failure to take these measures can have serious consequences, including heat exhaustion or dehydration.

Instructions

    • 1

Drink plenty of water. Your body tends to lose more water in a dry climate, especially when the weather is hot, because of heavy perspiration that quickly evaporates in the dry air. Failure to drink enough water results in dehydration. Drink water whenever you feel thirsty. Always carry water with you.

    • 2

Stay in the shade as much as possible. Exposure to the sun for long periods of time speeds dehydration. If you can, stay inside. If you must be outside, watch for the signs of dehydration, which include dry mouth, extreme thirst, fatigue, increased heart rate and respiration, decreased urine output, low blood pressure and dizziness. Severe dehydration can cause your body systems to shut down.

    • 3

Wear lightweight, white clothing. If it is unavailable, wear lighter colors rather than darker ones. Lighter colors reflect the heat of the sun whereas darker colors absorb the heating, increasing your body temperature. Select loose-fitting clothing, which promotes air flow and keeps you cooler. Wear a wide-brimmed hat to protect your head, face and neck from exposure to the sun and heat.

    • 4

Avoid overeating, which requires your body to work harder and go through more water. Reducing food intake helps conserve the water you need to survive.
