The Differences in Glossy and UV Coating

Almost all surfaces are coated. Starting from paper to wood, coating is commonly applied to a vast number of objects. Coating is a protective shield that covers the object from damage. However, sometimes layers of coating are applied to objects to protect from the harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays of the sun. Most objects are either UV coated or gloss coated.
  1. UV Coating for Glass and Gloss Coating for Tiles

    • The main difference between UV and gloss coating is the surface on which they are applied. One of the many surfaces on which UV coating is applied is glass. Glass, mainly when used as a windshield of a car or in spectacle lenses, need to be UV coated to block out the dangerous UV rays of the sun. Hence, UV is a common coating for glass. On the other hand, gloss is used to coat objects such as tiles. Tiles that are used on the floor are commonly gloss coated. The tiles are covered with gloss to give it an elegant and fashionable look.

UV Coating for Wood and Gloss Coating for Stone

    • Wood is another object that is coated with UV protection. Since a lot of chemicals are found in paints that are usually applied on wood, the UV coating protects from the harmful fumes and gases emitted from the paints. Stone, on the other hand, is coated with gloss. This is done mainly because stones are rough along the edges and need to be smoothened. The gloss coating helps to smoothen the surface. Stones that are used to build housing structures are commonly coated with gloss.

UV Coating for Aluminum Cans and Gloss Coating for Hair

    • Aluminum cans used for beverages are coated with UV to prevent the colors from leaking into the beverages they hold. Gloss is used to cover hair that is colored too. The glossy coating prevents the color from running out every time the hair is washed. It also gives a lustrous look to the hair and makes it more attractive.

    Different Uses in Paper

    • UV coating is often seen on paper. Paper is coated with UV to mainly deepen the color of the print on the paper. Gloss is also a very common coating option. Most magazine papers are gloss coated. This enhances the quality of the paper and protects the color from fading away. Sometimes though, both UV and gloss are simultaneously used to coat paper.
