How to Tie Yarn Balls

Yarn balls, also called yarnies or yarn flies, are soft lures that float on top of the water effortlessly due to their buoyancy. Commonly used for fly fishing, yarnies are nothing more than thick, brightly colored strands of micro UV fishing yarn tied together to form a small, puffy ball. While you can buy yarn balls in fishing stores or online, you can also make your own, which gives you the flexibility to mix and match colors according to how successful they are in helping you make the catch of the day.

Instructions

    • 1

Start by cutting three colors of micro UV yarn into 1-inch strands using a pair of sharp scissors. If you prefer your yarnies a little bigger, cut 2-inch strands of yarn instead.

    • 2

Stack the three pieces of yarn neatly on top of one another. Hold the stack between the fingers of one hand, pinching the stack in the center.

    • 3

Wrap the center tightly 10 times with clear elastic thread. Secure the wrapped thread with a knot. You will end up with what looks like a small, puffy butterfly.

    • 4

Use your fingers to fluff the yarn, forming a little ball. Trim the edges of the yarn ball, cutting off any stray pieces of yarn to create a perfect ball shape.

    • 5

Store the yarn ball in your fishing box until you are ready to use it or attach it to a hook just like you would any other lure. Making several yarn balls at a time will ensure that you have them handy when you need them.
