How to Scare Away a Bear

For campers and those living in rural areas, it is not uncommon to have an unexpected encounter with a bear. This can be a frightening experience. The important thing to remember is that the bear will be as scared of you as you are of it. Bears are born with a natural fear of humans. If a bear has not had much interaction with humans, it is easier to scare off. If it is used to humans, then more persistence will be required to get it to go away.

Instructions

    • 1

Check your surroundings. Make sure the bear has an escape route and is not trapped.

    • 2

Stand your ground. If you try to run, the bear will likely view it as an invitation to chase you.

    • 3

Yell at the bear. In a loud, authoritative and angry voice, scream at the bear to go away. It is vital to mean it, because the bear will know it if you don't.

    • 4

Step forward. If the intruding bear is more than 20 yards away, take a step toward it as you scream.

    • 5

Fire a gun. If yelling fails to drive away the bear and you have a gun on hand, discharge it into the air or ground.

    • 6

Use pepper spray. If the bear rushes toward you, spray its face with pepper spray if you have it. If not, grab a weapon such as a stick or shovel and strike it in the nose.
