Characteristics of Trout Fish

The arrival of trout season is much anticipated by fishermen and non-fishermen alike. This mostly freshwater fish, while difficult to fillet due to its fine hair-like bones, is known for its flaky texture and deliciously mild taste. While the varieties of trout differ vastly in size and color, they share many characteristics, particularly their feisty temperament. Saltwater trout are called weakfish, or weakies.
  1. Appearance

    • Trout do occur naturally in lakes, streams and rivers but are generally bred first in hatcheries and stocked in those places. Freshwater trout average 4 to 8 pounds and grow to about 22 inches in length, although extremes of 5 inches to 6 feet (a Mongolian species) are documented. Trout come in many different colors and are often striped, speckled or spotted.

    Gender Identification

    • A trained eye will be able to spot gender differences in trout. Some species are harder to sex than others. Male trout have pointier heads than females and sport a visible hook near the bottom of their jaw. Females of the species have a rounder head. You can determine gender by the egg sac present next to the female's stomach once the fish has been caught and gutted.

    Trout Senses

    • Because of their feisty nature, trout are fun to catch.

Trout's eyesight is very keen and discerning. Trout fisherman should wear colors that blend into their surroundings, avoid yellows and reds, and stay low while fishing. At night and in clear water these fish can see up to 20 feet and because of their eye placement, they have a broad range of vision. Because their sense of smell is also highly tuned, bait must smell like food, not people. Fishermen should avoid bug repellent, sun block and cologne. Trout cannot hear human speech but rely heavily on vibrations within the water that alert them to danger.

    Feeding Habits

    • Trout are not picky eaters and will make a meal of whatever happens to be flying around or swimming past. An injured insect makes for an easy catch. While trout prefer bugs, they find marshmallows, chicken livers, salmon eggs, power bait, cheese, corn, bees, small fish and worms palatable, as well, and will try to snatch them from a fishing hook.
