How to Identify the Climate of Each Land Biome

Climate, along with plant life, is the most defining feature of a biome, a regionally extensive ecosystem. When you know a region's biome, you automatically know its climate, and vice-versa: If an ecosystem is in the high latitudes with moist air, long, cold winters and lots of evergreen trees, you know that the biome is taiga. Once you know how to identify a biome with a climate, that biome's name will become a one-word code for speaking of a whole list of interrelated climatological and biological information.

Instructions

    • 1

Go online to science.jrank.org/pages/897/Biome.html, available in References.

    • 2

Read the page and take notes. The site gives information on all the world's major land biomes and information on the average precipitation and temperature of each.

    • 3

Look for patterns in the information. Once you can understand how biomes work, what makes a region a particular biome, they become easier to memorize. For example, you will notice how generally, the most dry biomes are found in extremes of altitude and latitude, while more habitable conditions are found in the zones in-between.
