How to Haul a Canoe

The best way to haul a canoe without scratching the roof of your vehicle is by securing it with a tower rack. The thrifty way to haul a canoe is with foam blocks and ropes, but it is significantly less stable. Foam blocks tend to slide under high winds and cause the canoe to dent and scratch the roof. In addition, it is much more difficult to properly secure a canoe with foam and ropes than with a tower rack. A tower rack attaches firmly to the roof of most cars, and provides strong support for the weight of the canoe.

Instructions

  1. Attach Tower Rack

    • 1

Line the front and back of the clips with black vinyl liners. Slip the lined clips into the base of the tower. There are four towers holding the two racks up, two on each rack. The lined clip slides into a slit on the side of the towers.

    • 2

Install the lock holders and brass fasteners. There are holes in the clips and towers with matching notches. Insert the lock holder into these holes and push the brass fastener over the lock.

    • 3

Tighten one side of both racks without moving the tower. Turn the lock a few times to tighten the towers. Close the covers and tighten the other side.

    • 4

Fine tune the tower tension by checking the gold slider on each tower. They should be an equal distance from the slider marks on each tower.

    • 5

Check both towers for safety with the doors of your vehicle open. Push and pull the towers to make sure they do not move. If the towers move, you need to tighten the screws.

    Secure the Canoe

    • 6

Lift the canoe from the middle and center it on the rack. Use two thick bungee cords to strap the canoe to the rack. If your rack comes with straps, then secure the canoe by tightening the straps around the body.

    • 7

Attach two separate bungee cords to the nose of the canoe. Pull the cords down and in opposite directions to form a triangle shape. Attach each cord under the front bumper. You want the bungee cord to hook onto the metal frame underneath.

    • 8

Attach two more bungee cords to the back end of the canoe. Attach them to the underside of your trunk, on the metal frame underneath.
