How to Bind Wild Sage

Artemisia is commonly refereed to as wild sage. You can bind wild sage to dry it or burn it as a smudge stick. Smudging an area with a bound bunch of wild sage cleanses energy fields by removing negative energies. Many Native American shamans use wild sage to purify sacred sites for rituals by smudging the sites. Wild sage grows abundantly in the desert and plains regions across the North American continent. It sometimes grows in the foothills that border deserts.

Instructions

    • 1

Pick and gather seven healthy, fully leafed sage stems that are 7 inches long on a warm, sunny day.

    • 2

Wind yarn diagonally around the end section of the stems around the base where there are no leaves. Continue to wrap the yarn diagonally around the bunch, moving up toward the top of the stems to bind the stems together.

    • 3

Bring the yarn back down and wrap it around the bunch diagonally, crossing the first wrapping until you reach the bottom again.

    • 4

Wrap the yarn around the base of the leaves four times to hold them securely in place and tie a knot in the yarn.

    • 5

Cut away any loose stems that stick out of the bottom of the wrap.

    • 6

Hang the bound sage bundle upside down in a warm, dry area that gets adequate ventilation. Wait two weeks for the wild sage to dry.
