How to Control Acid Deposition

Acid deposition is a foggier name for acid rain. Rainwater is naturally acidic because a small amount of atmospheric carbon dioxide is absorbed by rain to make a very weak solution of carbolic acid. Acid rain, fog and snow, however, are contaminated with sulfuric and nitric acids. The primary sources for these acids and their precursor chemicals in the atmosphere are electric power plants that burn oil and coal. Gasoline- and diesel-powered motor vehicles also contribute to atmospheric sulfuric and nitric acids, but the main cause of acid deposition worldwide is electricity production.

Instructions

    • 1

Become well informed about the problem. The causes and consequences of acid deposition are least understood on television and most clearly explained in books and magazines. Read about the situation if you care about it.

    • 2

Use electric appliances and lights only when you need them. Turn off lights when you leave a room.

    • 3

Replace old appliances with energy-efficient ones. Replace incandescent light bulbs with fluorescent and other energy-efficient bulbs.

    • 4

Lower your thermostat to 68 degrees in winter and raise it to 72 degrees in summer.

    • 5

      Insulate your home.

    • 6

Drive or ride an energy-efficient vehicle. Maintain it properly. Use public transportation or walk when it's feasible.
