Things You'll Need
Instructions
Decide what kind of biome you'd like to study. Choose from: rainforest, taiga, temperate forest, temperate grassland, savannah, alpine, chaparral and desert. The arctic and aquatic biomes are much harder to reproduce; stick to biomes with readily growing plants.
Poke a bull's eye of holes through the lid of your container with an awl. This allows air to pass into your mini-biome while still keeping the environment contained.
Fill the bottom quarter of the container with pebbles and the next third with soil. About half of the container should be open, giving your plants plenty of room to grow.
Study your biome and decide which seeds you want to plant. For instance, plant tussock grasses and bristlecone pine seeds in an alpine biome. Try succulents in a desert biome and orchids in a tropical biome.
Plant your seeds and water them until the water drains into the bottom of the pebble layer. Snap on the lid and place the container in the appropriate conditions. Tropical biomes need to be warm and moist. Desert biomes should be hot and dry, under a grow light. Alpine biomes are cold with pale sun.
Draw a picture of the kinds of people and animals that might live in your biome. Consider the environment and decide what creatures might need to survive. In a desert, for example, staying cool and hydrated is important. In an alpine environment, creatures have to stay warm.
