How to Do an Outline for a Shield Volcano

A shield volcano is just one of the many types of volcano found throughout the globe. The form of the volcano takes on a distinctive shield shape that can extend for thousands of meters above ground level in height and width. The world's largest shield volcano is Mauna Loa, which stretches 30,000 feet above the ocean floor and reaches almost 100 miles across at its base.

Instructions

    • 1

Draw the straight base line on the paper to indicate the ground level.

    • 2

Draw the layers of the rock under the ground level by drawing lines that run parallel to the one drawn in Step 1.

    • 3

Draw a line from the line drawn in step 1 at an angle 45 degrees above the horizontal.

    • 4

Draw another line that mirrors the line drawn in Step 3. Ensure the tips of the two lines meet in the middle.

    • 5

Erase the top part of the cone shape created and replace with a horizontally orientated concave line.
