How to Test for Salty Water

If you own a pond or aquarium where you keep saltwater fish, it's essential that you assess the sodium levels in your water. The health of your fish can suffer if the level of salt in your water is too low or too high. Once you've established the ideal level of salt needed to maintain the health of the breed of fish you keep, there are a number of products you can use to test for sodium.

Things You'll Need

  • Cup
  • WaterWorks Salt Water Check (optional)
  • LaMotte Salt Tracer (optional)

Instructions

  1. WaterWorks Salt Water Check

    • 1

Take a sample of your water in a cup.

    • 2

Remove your WaterWorks Salt Water Check from its packaging and take out a single test strip.

    • 3

Dip the test strip into your water sample and wait for the sodium level to be displayed. The strip will display concentration of sodium and the conductivity of your water. You'll receive 50 test strips with one order.

    LaMotte Salt Tracer

    • 4

Remove the battery cap from the top of the tracer and insert batteries.

    • 5

Remove the cap from the electrode.

    • 6

Rinse the electrode in deionized water or tap water and dry before the first use.

    • 7

Turn the unit on using the "On/Off" button and hold down the "Mode/Hold" button for two seconds.

    • 8

Scroll to the "Salinity" test setting and select.

    • 9

Fill the measuring cap that came with the tracer with a sample of your water to the "20 ml" mark and immerse the electrode in the water.

    • 10

Stir the electrode and wait for a reading.

    • 11

Rinse the electrode in deionized water or tap water after use.

    AquaChek White Salt Titrators

    • 12

Take a sample of the water you want to test in a cup. You'll need the cup filled about an inch high with water.

    • 13

Remove one test strip from its packaging and immerse it in your water sample.

    • 14

Leave the test in your water sample for three to four minutes. The yellow strip at the top of the test will turn dark when it has finished.
