Species That Compete With the Hawk

The hawk is a large bird of prey found all over North America. There are 14 different types of hawk, the largest of which can have a wingspan of over 5 feet. The hawk is a large predator and competes with birds and other animals for food and territory.
  1. Badgers

    • Badgers are small carnivorous mammals that eat the same foods as the hawk. The badger will hunt and eat gophers, squirrels, mice, rats and chipmunks. Other large predators such as the hawk may follow the badger and attempt to steal its catch.

    Great Horned Owl

    • The great horned owl and the hawk are fierce competitors for both food and nesting space. The reason both can co-exist in the same area is because the owl is nocturnal and hunts at night, while the hawk is active during the day. The two will encounter each other around the dawn and dusk hours and may compete for food. The great horned owl will also steal the hawk's nest to lay its own eggs.

    Other Hawks

    • Other hawk species are one of the hawk's biggest competitors because of their similarities. For example, the Swainson's hawk and the red-tailed hawk both live in Canada and the United States, inhabit similar grassland and parkland habitats and eat similar prey. Different hawk species can compete with each other for territory, nesting grounds and prey.

    Eagles

    • Large birds of prey, such as the eagle, compete with hawks. Being of a similar size and eating the same prey, the two birds can compete with each other as both are found in similar habitats.
