In What Regions Do Mudslides Typically Occur?

Mudslides are a natural phenomenon that cause a lot of costly property damage. Luckily, mudslides rarely claim lives, and while the toll of losing one's home in a slide is devastating, at least they don't usually cause fatalities. Mudslides occur everyday but are usually very small and do not effect many people.
  1. What are Mudslides?

    • Mudslides or landslides occur when rocks or loose sediment collapse and move down a slope. They can move slowly or rapidly and tend to occur after periods of heavy rain. Mudslides can stem from natural causes, such as earthquakes, volcanic activity, fires and storms, or they can be triggered by the actions of humans. Mudslides are similar in characteristics to avalanches but are not as deadly. Mudslides can start small and gain momentum and mass as they go.

    Where do Mudslides Occur?

    • Mudslides can and do occur in every state in the United States. Mudslides are worse in mountainous areas, such as California. They are also worse in areas prone to forest fires. Landslides may be worse in canyons and coastal regions as well. Areas with improper land management, forest devastation or parts of the country prone to rapid freezing and thawing may also see worse and more frequent occurrences of mudslides.

    Warning Signs of Mudslides

    • If you live in an area that experiences frequent mudslides, there are some warning signs to look out for. Structural issues in buildings, like cracks in walls or in the ground, may occur. Outside walls or stairs may begin pulling apart from the building it was joined to. Water may come up through the ground in a new place. You may hear a rumbling noise that seems to get louder. Pavement may collapse, and trees may begin to tilt. If you see any of these signs, prepare yourself for the possibility of an impending mudslide.

    Prevention of Mudslides

    • While mudslides can not be 100 percent prevented, there are some steps that can be taken to minimize the effects of future landslides. Structurally, drainage can be improved so that water will not build up in the midst of a large rainstorm. The steepness of slopes can be reduced, and the tops of the slopes can be excavated. Construction of retaining walls, berms or canals may help with containing the mudslides. Nets may also help minimize mudslide damage.
