How to Build a Leaf Box

Autumn brings with it beauty, cooler weather and a lot of leaves. Utilize the colorful leaves that fall in your yard and garden for decoration in the house. You can preserve leaves using wax paper and display them in a shadow box frame. Choose the most colorful leaves you can find in a variety of colors. Red, gold, brown, orange and yellow will make for a rainbow of colors in your leaf box. Hang it on the wall to showcase your leaves for years to come.

Instructions

    • 1

Purchase a shadow box frame in the color you prefer. Shadow box frames are frames that have an inch or two of space between the glass and back for displaying three dimensional items. The bigger the frame, the more leaves you can use. See resources for Web sites that offer shadow box frames. They can also be purchased at craft supply stores.

Collect leaves from your yard and garden. To press and dry the leaves, put each between two paper towels and then put them between the pages of a thick book. Close the book and add more weight by stacking cans of food or bricks if desired. Allow the leaves to dry in the book for a week. This method preserves the color while removing moisture.

Sandwich the dried leaves between two pieces of wax paper. Heat the iron to a medium setting. You just want it warm enough to melt the wax on the paper. Put the towel over the leaves and wax paper. Apply slight pressure while you iron over the towel for about 30 seconds. Lift the towel and check if the wax has transferred to the leaf. Repeat for another 30 seconds if necessary. Allow the waxed leaves to cool.

Remove the glass from the shadow box frame to glue the leaves on the back. Glue the leaves to the inside of the back of the frame using craft glue. Glue them in a manner that they look like they have fallen in a colorful pile. Let the glue dry completely before replacing the glass. Turn the frame on it's side to be sure all the leaves are secure before hanging it on the wall.
