Webelos Projects

Projects for Webelos scouts should always have an element of practical use in them. Whether the project is based on cooking, nature or even first aid, the project should do more than teach the boys about putting together some sort of craft. It should teach them something that they will remember for the rest of their lives. Because Webelos scouts are fourth and fifth graders, the project should be appropriate for their age range.
  1. Physical Skills

    • There are four activity pins for the Webelos scout to earn in the physical skills category, but the fitness pin or badge is required in the program to earn the Webelos badge. One of the projects that must be completed is for the scout to keep a daily record of his meals and snacks for a week. This is done by having the scout carry a small spiral tablet with him in his back pocket. Have the scout make notes of what he eats for each meal as well as how much he eats.

    Mental Skills

    • Mental skills are not a required activity for earning the Webelos scout badge, but there are four categories from which to choose. One of the projects required for the scholar portion of this section is accomplished by making a chart that shows how the scout's school system is run. With the help of a parent or guardian, the scout should set up a flow chart that begins with the school board, follows with the school superintendent and then branches out to include the administration at his own school. Creating a large poster board-type chart is not necessary. The important part is that scouts learn how the school system is run.

    Community

    • The Citizen activity badge is required for earning the Webelos badge. To help accomplish this, the scout should construct a chart similar to the school system chart that shows the three branches of the United States government. Start with the names of the president and vice-president of the United States, then include the governor of the state in which the scout lives and the local mayor.

    Technology

    • Within the technology group, there are four potential categories to choose from. None of them are required for either the Webelos badge or the Arrow of Light. The requirements for the badge include washing a car. With the help of an adult, the scout should wash and wax the family car. In this he will learn how to properly care for a vehicle.

    Outdoors

    • The Outdoorsman badge is required for the Arrow of light. Part of accomplishing this task involves planning an evening outdoor activity for your family that includes a campfire. With the help of an adult, the Webelos scout should properly set up and start a campfire, including taking all the necessary safety precautions and planning a menu that includes campfire-friendly foods such as hot dogs and marshmallows.
