Northern Russia
One area that will definitely benefit from global warming is northern Russia, which is part of the region known as Siberia. As warming increases, temperatures ideal for agriculture, for instance, will migrate further north in to these once cold regions. Since Russia encircles almost half of the Arctic Ocean, and the United States Geological Service estimates one-fourth of the world's undiscovered energy reserves lie there, Russia may also benefit from increased access to valuable natural resources.
Northern Canada
Northern Canada is another area that will likely benefit from global warming. Like Russia, Canada has a considerable amount of real estate residing in and around the Arctic, and will thus have land rights to much of the undiscovered natural resources that are there under the ice. Canada will also benefit as optimal crop-growing temperatures move further north, out of the United States and into the Canadian Prairies, for instance.
Greenland
Greenland may finally live up to its name as a result of global warming. Like many of the supposed benefits of global warming, it would come at a great cost, which would be the melting of Greenland's ice sheets, raising sea levels. The benefit would be undeniable to Greenland, however, because roughly 80 percent of its land mass is under ice.
Northwest Passage
Another area of the world that would benefit greatly from global warming is the northwest passage through the Canadian Arctic. It would allow ships to forgo the Panama Canal and get to and from either side of North America by what could be a more direct route. Similarly, travel by ship across the top of Russia through the Arctic Ocean would become far more feasible for the summer months.
