Purpose
The main purpose of a seacock is to control the inflow and outflow of water. They are primarily used in a boat's plumbing system, including toilets and sinks. A seacock is used to drain unwanted water out of plumbing components or out of a water ballast system.
Components
Most seacocks contain a flange that is generally bolted to a fairing block on the hull. They also have straight threads on the flange and tapered pipe threads on the other side, although some have straight threads on both sides.
Types
Seacocks are commonly made out of several different materials including bronze, plastic and brass; however, bronze is preferred because of its durability. There are three main types of seacocks. The first is a gate valve type that contains a red wheel. When the wheel is turned clockwise, the valve closes; when it is turned counterclockwise, it opens. The second is a ball valve type, which is operated by using a lever. A "Blakes" type seacock is more complex than the other types, and consists of a tapered peg and a lever.
Considerations
Whenever you leave your boat or you're out to sea, check your seacock to ensure that it's closed. Also check monthly for leaks and to ensure the seacock is functioning properly. Scrape the seacock each year and inspect it for corrosion. If it becomes corroded, replaced it. If it's corroded or not in proper working order, leakage will occur and can cause the boat to sink.
