Role of Brown Algae

Almost 1,500 species of brown algae range in color from dark brown to olive green and in size from microscopic to giant, complex kelp that can grow more than 300 feet. Gas-filled bladders help algae float near the surface to aid in photosynthesis. Brown algae have no roots, stems or flowers; its leaf-like structures called blades provide food for marine creatures. Kelp provides nutrition and other benefits for humans as well.
  1. Aquatic Role

    • Kelp forests are an important part of the food chain in ocean waters. Brown algae species are food for snails, sea urchins and other grazers. Kelp grazers fall prey to larger fish and sea otters, which serve as food for sharks and sea lions. Bottom dwellers such as crabs feed on scraps of brown algae and uneaten prey when it sinks to the bottom of the ocean.

    Medical Role

    • One species of brown algae, called Laminaria, is used in surgery to dilate the cervix. The day before surgery, dried pieces of Laminaria are inserted into the opening of the cervix and absorb water and body fluids, prompting the cervix to expand and stretch. Refined, pure algin found in Laminaria is used by the biomedical industry to keep the human body from rejecting organ transplants.

    Health Role

    • Marketing for kelp supplements include claims of weight-loss and help with disorders such as inflammatory arthritis, psoriasis and kidney disorders. Nutrients found in kelp may increase energy, boost immunity, promote healthy hair and nails and help protect against the effects of radiation. When it comes to herbal supplements, claims may not be backed by scientific evidence. Kelp is high in iodine, potassium, calcium and B vitamins. Known benefits of these minerals may lead to beneficial claims. Consult with your physician before taking kelp supplements.

    Additional Role

    • Brown algae or kelp is edible and nutritious. Alginates from brown algae are a source of alginic acid used by food, pharmaceutical, cosmetic, rubber and paper industries. You will find algin in ice cream, gum, bread, toothpaste, lotion and paint. Kelp fertilizers aid in plant growth and nutritional value of food grown in the ground. In many countries, cooked kelp provides the vegetable in a nutritionally balanced meal.
