Difference Between Titmouse & Titmice

The difference between Titmouse and Titmice is the number of birds. Titmice is the plural of the name Titmouse. These are small, active birds out of a grouping of 13 related species in four genera. Titmice are of the genus Baeolophus. Chickadees are in the genus Poecile. They share the family grouping of Paridae. One bird, the Verdin, is in the family Remizidae, genus Auriparus. The family Aegithalidae, genus Psaltriparus, is represented by the Bushtit.
  1. The Titmice of North America

    • There are four different species of Titmice in North America: The Bridled Titmouse found in Mexico and southern areas of New Mexico and Arizona; the Oak Titmouse found primarily in California; the Juniper Titmouse in the southwestern U.S.; and the Tufted Titmouse. Of the latter, there are two types: the Black-crested Tufted Titmouse found in Mexico and central Texas and the Northern Tufted Titmouse which is the most wide spread of all covering from the central Central Plains states to the East Coast and from the Gulf of Mexico nearly to the Canadian border.

    The Chickadees of North America

    • A Black-capped Chickadee.

The Chickadees are the most numerous species in this group of birds with seven different species in North America. The most widespread is the Black Capped Chickadee ranging from coast to coast across the middle to northern states up into Canada and Alaska. The Carolina Chickadee is found in the southern U.S. from Central Texas to the Atlantic coast. The Black Capped and the Carolina have begun to hybridize in a small zone where their ranges overlap. The Mountain Chickadee lives from the Rocky Mountains west from the U.S./Mexican border and up into the western edge of Alberta and much of British Columbia. The Gray-headed Chickadee and the Boreal Chickadee live in the north. The Boreal covers most of Canada while the Gray-headed is found only in northern Alaska and Yukon and Northwest Territory. The Mexican Chickadee lives only in the Chiricahua Mountains of Arizona and the Animas Mountains of New Mexico and south into central Mexico. The Chestnut-backed Chickadee is found along the west coast from midway up California all the way to the southern coast of Alaska.

    The Verdin in North America

    • The Verdin is a bird of the southwest. It is found in parts of southern California, Arizona, New Mexico and Texas, then south into Mexico.

    The Bushtit in North America

    • The Bushtit is found along the west coast from the Baja Peninsula to the Canadian border, east across Nevada, Utah and Colorado, then south into Arizona, New Mexico and just a bit of west Texas, extending down into Mexico. There are two variations: the Pacific and the Interior.
