How to Call Deer to You Using Your Hands & Mouth

Deer communicate with each other using a series of grunts, bleats and snorts. Hunters may have heard these sounds while chasing whitetails. Replicating these noises is one way to call the deer and increase your chance of a trophy catch. Using your mouth and hands in combination with a mouth call is the most effective way to do this, as it produces a variety of loud sounds that the deer may recognize and be enticed by.

Instructions

    • 1

Buy a mouth call. This is a flexible piece of tubing which is attached to a wooden or plastic mouthpiece. You use the mouth call to create different deer call sound effects that the animal will recognize. It is an investment as you can use it season after season, provided you look after it.

    • 2

Familiarize yourself with the different deer calls. For example, a buck about to fight makes a distinctive wheezing sound compared to a female ready to breed that makes a bleating sound. Outdoor Adventures Network provides an on-line resource for identifying these. Listen to understand the types of sounds you will need to replicate.

    • 3

Place the mouthpiece between your lips. Cup your hands around your mouth while supporting the instrument with your fingers. Hold the tubing with the fingers of your dominant hand.

    • 4

Exhale gently into the mouthpiece. The mouthpiece will make a dull, bleating sound. Inhaled through the mouthpiece and the sound becomes squeakier and more wheezy. Experiment with the sounds that you can make by changing the force of your breath through the mouthpiece.

    • 5

Manipulate the length of the tubing by pulling it down to elongate it, or contract it by squashing it with your fingers. Continue to practice the breathing exercises through it to change the sound. Practice varying the sounds you make so you are more comfortable using the instrument when hunting.

    • 6

Practice a contact grunting sound. This consists of a longer, firm exhalation and can be used throughout the year. You do not need to flex the tubing, simply breath through the mouthpiece and cup your hand around the instrument.

    • 7

Create an aggressive call that mimics a buck ready to fight. Inhale and exhale quickly out of the mouthpiece to make a wheezing sound. This can be used to attract other fighting bucks over since it is a highly aggressive call.

    • 8

Lure less aggressive bucks with a series of wheezing and grunting sounds. The buck will be curious to find out what the sound is, and will not feel threatened. Vary how tightly you cup your hands around the tubing to change the pitch and loudness of the call.
