How to Save Gray Water

The waste-free water that leaves your house is known as gray water. It comes from your sinks, washing machine, bath and shower. Water that contains waste from toilets, dishwashers and kitchen sinks is known as black water. With the right equipment, gray water can be saved and used for other purposes, such as watering your yard. You can install an expensive gray water system or create some do-it-yourself changes to your home to recycle the water.

Instructions

    • 1

Unhook the drain hose from your washing machine and place it into a laundry tub next to your washing machine. The leftover water will drain into the laundry tub instead of through the plumbing system.

    • 2

Shower with the plug in so that water accumulates at the bottom of the bathtub. After showering, siphon the water out of the tub with a garden hose into buckets so that the water can be reused.

    • 3

Place small plastic containers in sinks when pouring water. Allow the excess water to fall into the plastic containers. Place the water that is collected in large rain barrels outdoors to be used in the future.

    • 4

Place rain barrels outside of your house to collect rain water from gutters. Put lids on the barrels after water has been collected to keep insects away from the water.

    • 5

Use the collected water for watering your lawn, flowers and plants throughout the hot summer months.
