How to Power a Light Bulb With a Potato

It is true that a potato can provide the necessary electricity to power a light bulb (yes, a very small bulb). Add some wiring and two terminals, and you have a complete circuit. Granted, you'll produce only enough "juice" for a small LED or maybe a night light, but potatoes can produce some amperage.

Things You'll Need

  • Potato
  • 2 pennies
  • 2 galvanized nails
  • Electrical wire

Instructions

    • 1

Use the knife to cut the potato in half. Roll a piece of wire around each of your galvanized nails, and roll a piece of wire around each penny, leaving about six inches of wire trailing away from each nail and penny.

    • 2

Stick a penny and a nail into each half of the potato. Connect the nail from the first half to the penny in the second half, with the wire extending from each.

    • 3

Connect the penny from the first half and the nail from the second half to the two inputs for the light bulb. Current will now be flowing. If you use a tiny bulb like the ones used for night lights, you will be able to bring light from a potato.
