How to Paint Camouflage

Many items can be painted with camouflage, particularly guns and other hunting equipment. When painting camouflage yourself, there are several different techniques you can try. Combining the most effective parts of each technique may take longer but renders a better camouflage. The key to painting effective camouflage is to find a non-reflective spray paint. Krylon makes one specifically for this purpose, and it is called Camouflage. It is part of their Fusion line and can be used on plastic, metal, wood and many other surfaces.

Instructions

    • 1

Spray the entire object with a coat of khaki spray paint. Use a matte paint or one specifically made for painting camouflage. Ensure all surfaces are coated in paint. Allow to dry for several hours.

    • 2

Wrap the object haphazardly in 2-inch masking tape, leaving several open spaces. This does not have to be neat, and should be placed as randomly as possible. Cover approximately half of the object.

    • 3

Coat the object with olive green spray paint. Allow to dry.

    • 4

Remove the masking tape. Use 1-inch masking tape to cover most of the object, leaving only small areas which will be painted brown. Leave approximately 1/4 of the object showing.

    • 5

Paint the object using the brown spray paint. Allow to dry for at least an hour. Remove the tape.

    • 6

Lay pine needles or a thin branch on top of the object. Spray paint through the needles or branch, alternating colors as you move them around the object. Continue until you are satisfied with the camouflage print.

    • 7

Allow to dry for at least four hours before touching.
