Types of Catfish in Colorado

The Colorado Division of Wildlife has noted that the catfish is one of the "most sought-after game fish in the United States." The catfish's popularity can be attributed to its taste and the ease with which it is caught. Colorado's waterways include channel, cat, blue and black bullhead catfish.
  1. Channel Catfish

    • The Channel catfish is the only catfish native to Colorado. They have long whiskers (called barbels), forked tails and randomly distributed black spots on their skin. Their heads tend to be smaller than other catfish. Fishermen in Colorado regularly catch channel catfish that weigh over 30 lbs. A state record catch of 43 lbs. and 6 oz. was set in 2010. Channel cats are caught year-round in Colorado. "Channel catfish are one of the tastiest fish you'll ever eat," according to fisheries biologist Andrew Cushing.

    Blue Catfish

    • Blue catfish have whiskers and forked tails like channels, but their heads are usually larger and rounder. The blue catfish in Colorado generally weigh between 10 and 15 lbs. The state record as of 2011 was a 20 lb., 1 oz. catch from 1976. The GrandFishingReport.com website notes that the blue catfish's white meat is "tender and delicate."

    Flathead Catfish

    • The flathead catfish has a flattened head, tiny eyes and large mouth with a protruding lower lip. Flatheads are not very big in Colorado. Some species in other parts of America can get as large as 100 lbs. In Colorado, the top catch as of 2011 weighed just over 10 lbs.

    Black Bullhead Catfish

    • The black bullhead catfish is easily recognized by its black or dark green color and its dark whiskers. It weighs only 1 or 2 lbs. The bullhead is also known for its unattractive appearance. What it lacks in size and appearance, however, it makes up for in taste. According to "Game &Fish" magazine, bullheads are "excellent" when fried.
