How to Clean a Footpath

Footpaths are dirt, wood or stone trails used by hikers, runners and walkers on the edge of roads, in parks or backyards. Depending on where the footpath is located it may be maintained by a national park, a town, the state or the individual property owner. Maintenance is important because footpaths are exposed to the elements year round. Improper or untimely maintenance can cause a footpath to become unusable. Footpaths that are not maintained can become dangerous and cause accidents.

  1. Types of Footpaths

    • 1

Dirt footpaths are most commonly found in forests, mountains, national parks and fields. Dirt footpaths keep a person from getting lost in an area where one could easily lose their way. The biggest problem with dirt footpaths is that they can be easily obstructed by stones and grass or become eroded by rain, snow or flooding. Dirt footpaths should be built with drains so that they will not erode too quickly. In addition, dirt trails should be swept and scouted daily to make sure litter, stones or sticks will not cause injury to those walking on them. Weed killer is often sprayed on dirt footpaths monthly for maintenance.

    • 2

Wood footpaths are often found in gardens, national parks or forests. Wooden footpaths act as bridges, steps or stairs to help guide a walker through wet, steep or hard-to-get-to territory. Wooden footpaths should be maintained regularly to make sure they are not broken, splintered, or chipped, which would make them hazardous to those who use them. Wooden footpaths should be kept clean by sweeping or pressure cleaning, which is the use of a high-pressure hose spraying water or a cleaning fluid over the path to remove dirt and moss.

    • 3

Stone footpaths are frequently seen in gardens or parks. Remove weeds regularly because they can grow, knocking the stones out of place and causing erosion in the sand around the stones. Use a pressure cleaner to remove marks, moss or dirt from the stones. Instead of spraying the whole area, try to spray each stone in a sweeping motion, according to Safe Gardening.

Concrete is also used on footpaths in parks, gardens, national parks, roadways and in backyards. Weed killer should be used or weed removal done often to make sure that weeds do not push up the concrete or create cracks. Pressure cleaners should also be used to clean concrete, which can yellow or turn brown due to constant exposure to the elements.
