Camp Gear Checklist

Spending time in the outdoors is a family tradition for many, and a new hobby for others. First-time campers may be a little worried about what to take and what to leave home. Bring the necessities to survive and a few extras to enjoy your time outdoors and camping will quickly become a favorite getaway activity.
  1. Lodging

    • Perhaps the most important item to remember is a place to sleep. Packing the tent is basic and somewhat obvious, but also remember to bring the tent-related items such as tent stakes to keep it in place.

A tarp is necessary to put under the tent to protect the bottom from absorbing moisture from the ground. Even though the ground may feel dry, moisture can seep in through the tent and make for a cold night and wet belongings. A sleeping bag, the heaviness determined by the climate, is a necessity to stay warm. Pack a pillow for a better night's sleep.

    Warmth

    • Pack clothes for all types of weather. The forecast may say it will be sunny and warm, but that may change quickly--especially for weeklong or longer trips. Bring waterproof outerwear in case of rain, and bring clothes that can be layered, such as sweatshirts and long pants. The early morning hours can be especially chilly.

In areas that allow campfires, be prepared with firewood and matches. Check with the campground or managing organization before arriving to ensure that fires are allowed. Some areas have restrictions regarding firewood to prevent the spread of some species of insects.

    Cooking

    • Remember, you are camping and will not have access to a gourmet kitchen while in the outdoors. Be prepared to cook over an open fire, if allowed, with the necessary utensils. Most grilling utensils work well for cooking over the campfire, such as long-handled spatulas and forks. If you're cooking using a camp stove, pack extra fuel to ensure that you have enough. Also, pack plates, silverware and cups that can be thrown away or washed for an environmentally friendly alternative.

    Personal Items

    • Even though you are camping, personal hygiene is still important to most people. Remember the essentials such as a toothbrush, toothpaste and soap. Insect repellent and sunscreen are important as well. A basic first aid kit containing bandages, pain relievers, antiseptic spray or cream and personal medication should always be available as well.

    Miscellaneous

    • Other odds and ends to pack for your camping trip include a flashlight, extra batteries, books, puzzles, cards and other entertainment-oriented items. Basic tools such as a hammer, screwdriver, pliers, scissors or knife may come in handy too.
