Presentation Topics in Ecology

Biodiversity

• Biodiversity is a possible ecological presentation topic. Biodiversity is interesting in its own right but particularly relevant to us modern humans because we are having a negative impact on the biodiversity of the rest of the planet. In fact, the period we are now living in is referred to as the Sixth Mass Extinction. Thus, biodiversity is a relevant and important ecological topic to be discussed.

Population Ecology

• Population ecology, and more generally population demographics, is another important topic in ecology as it relates to human beings. The human population reached 7 billion and is projected to climb all the way to 9 billion over the next few decades. This massive population increase has had an effect on other species populations. Some of these effects have been negative and some have been positive. The continuing increase of the human population will have many as yet unseen effects on the populations of other species, and so it is a topic worth talking about.

Human Ecology

• Another interesting presentation topic within the field of ecology is human ecology, which focuses on how humans relate to the natural world. We are an animal species and were not so different from other animals species, in that we had an ecological niche and we stuck to that niche. However, as a species, we have expanded beyond that niche and believe that, in some ways, we have transcended our ecological niche and instead come to control nature.

Evolutionary Ecology

• A more traditional ecological area of study to make a presentation on is evolutionary ecology. The ways in which evolution influences how a species interacts with its environment and how an environment causes changes in the evolutionary trajectory of a species is a field of research that is being played out in a million different ways every day. A presentation on how evolution and ecology influence each other could be a fascinating glimpse in to this area of the sciences.
