How to Clean a Trail

Maintaining a trail may seem like tedious work, especially if the trail is larger than average. But keeping the trail free of debris and trash makes it safer, more enjoyable and more aesthetically pleasing for anyone who happens to be navigating it. The majority of trail debris is underbrush from surrounding trees and bushes, fallen limbs from trees and discarded refuse from people who have walked the trail, such as bottles, cans and plastic bags.

Things You'll Need

  • Heavy duty trash bags

Instructions

    • 1

Gather as many helpers as possible for the cleanup. Put on the work gloves. Open the extra strength trash bags. Begin to pick up large pieces of trash and discarded containers and place them in the trash bags. When full, tie off the trash bags and take them to a local landfill.

    • 2

Lift fallen tree limbs out of the way of the trail. If the limb is too heavy, enlist the help of a friend or two. Move the limbs to the side of the trail, away from the traffic area.

    • 3

Pick up larger branches and other medium sized obstacles and move them out of the way of the trail as well. Move large rocks that may be a hazard for joggers away from the trail.

    • 4

Turn on the leaf blower. Walk the full length of the trail and push all the smallest pieces of debris away to make the trail look cleaner and well kept.
