The Advantages of a Rainy Season

Everybody has experienced times when they look out the window in despair at the rain as their plans are negatively impacted. The weekend camping trip, or the trip to the zoo with the kids, is no longer an option. Rain can even bring bad moods or even depression. Rain, however, has many positive effects. If you are feeling "blue" because of rainy weather, there are some positive thoughts that might help your perspective.
  1. Fresh Air

    • When rains come, it replenishes plant life, which increases vegetative growth. This is important to the environment because the more vegetation the world has, the more CO2 is absorbed from the air during photosynthesis, increasing what is called the carbon sink and offsetting greenhouse gas warming. NASA researchers credit increased rain to the increasing of the carbon sink, which encourages plant growth. In layman terms, people have cleaner air and breathe better, which is a very healthy aspect of a rainy season.

    Crops Increase

    • In society today people expect to be able to go to the grocery store and pick up the weekly groceries without much thought. Only when prices hike up do people stop to wonder why that is. Without a good rain, seasonal crops can be adversely affected, and ultimately, so will people's checkbooks. When a drought hits, the farmer is not the only one that pays the price; the consumer ultimately also is affected. Sometimes certain fruits or vegetables are hard to find, driving up the price, and ultimately affecting the nation's economy.

    Cheaper Travel

    • If you have ever planned a trip, you know how expensive it can be during peak season. Try to take a different approach to your travel plans and capitalize on the opportunities that a rainy season provides. Booking lower fares, cheaper accommodations and having some negotiating powers, can all be a result of a rainy season. You will be pleasantly surprised at the array of affordable options, and may even plan an oversees excursion that you originally thought was out of your price range.

    Droughts Cause Problems

    • Lack of rain can cause serious droughts, bringing a plethora of problems to different parts of the world. Droughts can limit water supplies, cause further famine in some third-world countries, and cause wildfires that can destroy homes and take lives. Wildfire season typically lasts from March through May and is defined as hot, dry weather conditions generating the greatest chance for fires sparked by natural causes such as lightening as well as human error, such as cigarettes and campfires. The index of soil conditions lists areas that are high at risk, then the government declares precautions that must be taken until a drought ends. Water consumption is often limited and open campfires are prohibited.
