Tornado Warning Signs & Safety Precautions

Tornadoes can cause massive damage to buildings and injure or kill people. Thankfully there are many different warning signs that signal a tornado's approach. Unusual clouds, noise and precipitation can all be signs of tornadoes. There are also different safety procedures to follow during a tornado to stay safe. Some towns also have tornado sirens warning citizens of possible tornadoes.
  1. Wind and Clouds

    • The most common sign of a tornado is a swirling funnel of clouds. Fast-moving clouds indicate high wind speeds which can lead to tornadoes, and debris swirling in the air or along the ground can also indicate tornado conditions. Tornado conditions may also be present if the sky is green or black.

    Rain and Roar

    • Tornadoes are usually accompanied by heavy rain. Large hail can also be present. Many times heavy rain and hail will stop and start suddenly. Heavy rain can hide some tornadoes. Another sign of tornado conditions is a constant roar that lasts longer than thunder. It can sound like a train, a jet plane or a waterfall.

    Indoor Safety

    • Stay away from windows and glass. Immediately go into any center room in the house. It can be a bathroom with no windows, a stairwell or even a hallway. If there is a basement in the house, go there instead of staying on the ground floor. Get under a mattress for protection from falling debris. Never take shelter in a mobile home. Tornadoes can rip mobile homes from the ground easily.

    Outdoor Safety

    • Always try to get inside. If there is no shelter available, find low ground. Lie flat and face down on the ground. Anyone outside should place their hands over the back of their head to protect themselves. Stay away from trees or anything else that could fall. If in a vehicle, get out. Tornadoes can pick up vehicles easily.
