What Do Starfish & Anemones Have in Common?

Although starfish and anemones share some common features and habits, such as living in the marine environment, they have more differences than similarities. Also called sea star, the starfish is a close relative of sea urchins and sand dollars. Anemones, named after the flowers from the genus anemone, are closely related to coral and jellyfish; most species live attached to rocks or the ocean floor. About 2,000 species of starfish exist in the world's oceans, compared to more than 1,000 anemones species.
  1. Animal Kingdom

    • As animals, starfish and anemones do not perform photosynthesis. This is an important feature that characterizes all members of the Animal Kingdom. Also called Animalia, the kingdom is divided into several groups called Phylum. Starfish are part of the Phylum Echinodermata, together with sea cucumbers and sea urchins, while anemones and other stinging invertebrates are members of the Phylum Cnidaria, which means "nettle" in Greek.

    Reproduction

    • Some species of starfish and anemones reproduce asexually, without the help of a sexual partner. During asexual reproduction, a part of the body detaches and develops into a new individual. This type of reproduction is also called agamogenesis.

    Habitat, Colors and Size

    • Both starfish and anemones are present in the world's oceans, at various depths, but the majority of species occur in coastal waters of tropical regions. Species of both starfish and anemone can show diverse bright colors and shades, from pale yellow to deep red and blue. Their size ranges from less than one inch to more than five feet.

    Regeneration

    • Starfish and anemones have a great ability to regenerate their tissues. Starfish can completely regenerate their limbs, and even their bodies, by keeping their vital organs in their arms while the new tissue grows. Some species of starfish can grow a complete individual from only an arm fragment. Among the anemones, the species Aiptasia diaphana is an example of high and quick ability to heal and regenerate.
