The Top Three Ways to Save Energy

Most people are interested in saving energy to help the environment or to reduce their electricity bill, and saving this energy can be an easy process. Once you change a few of your habits around the house, you will be surprised at how much energy and money you can save.
  1. Unplug Devices

    • One of the top ways to save energy is to turn off and unplug devices that aren't being used. If an appliance is plugged into an outlet with an active electrical current it will use energy regardless of whether the appliance is being used. So unplug all chargers like the ones for phones, electronic toothbrushes and shavers. Turn off and unplug any kitchen appliances such as coffee pots and toasters. Even consider unplugging stereos and lamps that aren't used regularly.

    Fluroscent Bulbs

    • According to the Union of Concerned Scientists, if every U.S. home replaced just one regular light bulb with a fluorescent bulb, it would reduce 90 billion lbs. of greenhouse gas emissions from power plants, which is also the equivalent of taking 7.5 million cars off the road. Fluorescent bulbs use two-thirds of the energy that a regular light bulb does and can last up to 10 times longer.

    Air-dry Dishes and Clothes

    • Choosing the air-dry setting on your dishwasher instead of using the normal heat cycle can reduce the energy used by the dishwasher by up to 50 percent. Not all dishwashers are equipped with this setting so if you don't the option of air-dry, simply open the door after the washing cycle has ended and let the dishes air-dry this way. You can also save a lot of energy and money by not using the clothes dryer. Instead of turning on the dryer as soon as the washing machine cycle ends, try hanging your clothes outside on a line or inside on a clothes rack.

    Other Tips

    • Close the doors and vents to rooms that aren't being used. Many people will waste money trying to cool or heat a room that isn't used. Don't stand in front of the refrigerator for extended periods and check that your fridge has a good seal so no cold air escapes. Turn off lights when you exit a room and open blinds and windows for natural lighting instead of using lightbulbs.
