How to Attach a Spinnerbait Trailer Hook

It seems people from all ages and stages of society have, and do enjoy fishing to some degree. For many others can be an addictive sport, who enjoy and practice it more frequently. We have all heard tales about "the one that got away" in some fashion or another. Professional fishermen and even amateurs have devised ways to keep fish on the line, guaranteeing a secure catch. One such way involves the addition of a trailer hook, sometimes called a "stinger" hook, which is secured to the rear main hook of a spinnerbait or buzzbait lure. Any fishermen can attach his own variation of a trailer hook to his spinner bait, after he considers a few options.

Instructions

    • 1

Pick out your favorite spinnerbait or buzzbait lure. Make sure the spinnerbait lure actually functions by twisting and turning in the water, during trolling or retrieval. Use a buzzbait lure, which creates a vibration to attract fish, if you wish. Make certain that with either lure they have a large rear main hook on the end.

    • 2

Pick out a suitable trailer hook, which will be a standard design hook, or an actual trailer hook which has an offset angle up near the eye. Choose a trailer hook size that will be as larger or slightly smaller than the spinner hook dimensions, with the same curving profile. More importantly, push the spinner bait hook tip through the eye of the trailer hook to makes sure it passes through.

    • 3

Cut a small section of aquarium tubing about 1/4-inch in length. Use aquarium plastic tubing or medical tubing that comes in approximately 3/16-inch diameter. Fit the section of plastic tubing over the eye of the trailer hook. It must push on with a snug fit, which means the inside diameter of the tube must fit over the trailer hook eye.

    • 4

Push the tip of the spinnerbait hook directly through the plastic tube, into the eye of the trailer hook and out the other end of the tube. Pull the trailer hook down to the bottom of portion of the spinnerbait hook. Stretch the trailer hook past the end of the spinnerbait, which should trail, with the trailer hook pointing toward the back of the spinnerbait lure. This will induce the fish to snag on the trailer hook if it strikes and misses the spinner bait.

Place the same type of plastic tube section on the eyelet of a feathered treble (three-sided) hook, if you wish. Attach it so two hooks of the treble hook face upward and the third one faces down.
