Different Types of Spiderwebs

Spiderwebs are devices created by spiders out of the silk they produce from their bodies. They are used as a means of capturing insects so that the spider can eat, and contrary to what some might think, they are different from cobwebs in that spiderwebs are still actively in use by a live spider looking to live another day by capturing its next meal.
  1. Funnel Web

    • One of the more common types of webs spun by spiders is the funnel web, which is nothing more than a type of sheet web that is laid out in a horizontal manner and funnels down into a hole. The spider waits at the bottom of the hole and when an unsuspecting insect stumbles into the web the spider rushes out, bites and then drags the prey down to the cubby hole at the bottom.

    Orb Web

    • An orb web is spun within a rectangular frame of silk, and the spider builds a hub in the center, with various strands of sticky as well as non-sticky silk radiating from the hub out to the frame. When everything is finished, the spider will wait until it feels vibrations on the web. The sticky strands hold the prey in place while the spider rushes in for the kill. Orb webs are always vertical.

    Dome Web

    • A dome web is a rarer form of spiderweb which is in essence in a type of sheet web. The spider generally hangs upside down under the arch of the dome, waiting for its prey. While using fewer sticky strands than the traditional orb web, the maze of strands within the dome is enough to confuse and eventually lead an insect to its meeting with a sticky strand, at which point the spider can move in and enjoy a tasty snack. Dome webs are horizontal.

    Sheet Web

    • Sheet webs are one of the least artistic forms of spider webs in use, and are generally exactly as the name suggests: giant sheets of webbing spread out over a large expanse. Sheet webs are always horizontal, and they generally have loose, randomly-spun tangles of silk above them which serve as a means of disorienting insects and knocking them down into the actual sticky strands of the sheet web below.
