How to Keep Terrariums

A terrarium, meaning "little world," is an enclosed glass or plastic container in which to grow plants or insects. According to the Purdue University Cooperative Extension, terrariums are based on the Wardian case, a glass box devised in the 1820s by English botanist Nathaniel Ward to transport plants collected in distant countries back to the British Isles. Today, terrariums have many uses including table gardens, house decorations, centerpieces, nature study, plant propagation and scientific observation.

Instructions

    • 1

Place terrarium in indirect light away from a window. Keep it out of any direct sunlight.

    • 2

Make sure the terrarium's cover is on tightly, and preferably made of clear glass or Plexiglas, to prevent the loss of interior humidity and keep any insects from escaping.

    • 3

Water the terrarium only when the soil surface becomes dry, and then add just enough to moisten the soil. No water should ever stand on the soil. It is better to underwater than over-water. If necessary, add more moss, or sand and large pebbles to the original terrarium to ensure an adequate drainage layer.

    • 4

Maintain the plants on an ongoing basis. Make note of the amount of light and moisture and the range of temperatures they prefer, and let these factors help you determine which plants stay and which plants you may want to add later. Remove any pants that crowd others. Use more of the types of plants that are thriving. If plants become too tall, pinch them back.

    • 5

Keep your terrarium clean by daily replacing the food and water of any insects and removing their waste. Clean the glass on the tank at least once a week with organic soap, warm water and a sponge or paper towels.
