How to Build a Wasp Trap Using Plastic Bottles

Wasps are beneficial for the environment and for humans because they feed on other pests. However, if a wasp's nest is near your home it can become a problem. There are chemicals, normally in the form of spray, that will kill wasps on contact, but they often harm the surrounding environment. Make a wasp trap using a plastic bottle is a much more environmentally safe way to rid your home of these pests.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the lid from a 2 liter soda bottle. Empty out the contents and wash in water.

    • 2

Cut the top off the plastic bottle. Using scissors or a craft knife, carefully cut the bottle just below the neck where the bottle straightens out. This is around 5 inches from the top of the bottle.

    • 3

Add small rocks to the bottom of the bottle so that it will be weighed down. Fill the plastic bottle halfway with water. Add a few drops of liquid soap to the water.

    • 4

Mix the water and soap using your fingers. The soapy water will stop the wasps from being able to escape the bottle.

    • 5

Spread honey on the cut-off part of the bottle. Spread it over the outside of the top because you will flip it upside down over the trap. Use a knife or your finger to put a thick layer on the bottle top.

    • 6

Turn the cut-off section of the bottle upside down and place it inside the remaining bottle like a funnel. Secure it in place with duct tape.

    • 7

Place the bottle outside near the wasp nest. Empty the trap every day to dispose of the dead wasps.
