Family Camping Survival Tips

Camping is a family activity that allows for quality time, exercise and learning about nature. However, the wilderness presents several dangers that do not occur in the safety of family homes, such as wild animals, hiking accidents and exposure. Therefore, it is essential that families know how to be safe when camping before they go on a camping trip.
  1. Food and Water

    • When a family goes camping, they should bring roughly one gallon of water per person per day. A half gallon of water per person per day is the absolute minimum. It is also important that they bring water purification tablets in case they run out of water and need to use a natural source. When you're camping, it is important to bring as many non-perishable food items as possible because it may be impossible to keep cold food cold and hot food hot for the length of the trip. No one should bring food into their tent with him, as it will attract wild animals. If possible, keep all food items in a vehicle, at a safe distance from sleeping tents or in a food storage locker.

    First Aid Kit

    • A camping first-aid kit should include the usual first aid-kit items, such as antiseptic, antibiotic ointment, burn cream, tweezers, bandages, gauze and medical tape. In addition to those items, it is important to bring calamine lotion, sunblock, pain reliever/fever reducer, cold medicine, an emergency thermal blanket and a snakebite kit. A family should also be sure to bring along any prescription medications that individuals in the family are on and any allergy medications that may be necessary. The latter is especially important if anyone in the family has severe allergies, in which case an epinephrine autoinjector is essential for a camping trip.

    Stay Together

    • Family members on camping trips should stay together in groups at all times. Children should not hike, climb or enjoy water sports without an adult. No one member should be alone, even at the campsite or when going to the bathroom. In the event of an emergency, such as injury, illness or animal attack, there is safety in numbers.

    Clothes and Sleeping Gear

    • Camping survival depends on protection from the weather. Each family member should have appropriate clothes, according to the weather or any potential weather changes. Include warm, insulated clothes for cold weather and light, breathable clothes for hot weather. Either way, any family member planning to go hiking should bring hiking boots and pants.

It is okay to bring light sleeping bags and blankets on a family hiking trip. However, the temperature can drop fast in some places, so include at least one insulated blanket per family member in the camping gear.

    Battery-Operated Radio

    • Before a family goes camping, they should check the weather where they are going camping. If they are going camping for more than one night, they should bring along a battery-operated radio to listen to weather reports. In the event of extreme weather, such as a hurricane, tornado or blizzard, the family will want to know in advance.
