National Animal Endangered Species List

Endangered animal species can be found in every state across the U.S. Many of these species become endangered through human activities. The U.S. Fish &Wildlife Service Endangered Species Program compiles a list of national endangered species. It uses legislation and government policies to protect wildlife across the country.
  1. Endangered Species Act

    • The U.S. Fish &Wildlife Service is the main department responsible for administering the Endangered Species Act. The legislation was enacted in Congress in 1973. Under the ESA the federal government has a responsibility to protect three things: endangered species, threatened species and critical habitat. It is up to the U.S. Fish &Wildlife Service's Endangered Species Program to decide which species become protected. Once an animal is listed as endangered it receives federal protection. Humans cannot harm, harass, hunt or collect the animal. They cannot disrupt the animal's breeding activities or threaten its habitat.

    What They Do

    • The U.S. Fish &Wildlife Service Endangered Species Program investigates the health of a species; the program looks at the percentage of habitat destruction, if disease or predators are a threat, any man-made factors threatening its survival and if current regulations aren't properly protecting the species. For those species listed, the program works to protect habitats, awarding grants to voluntary conservation projects and managing recovery plans to increase the population.

    Regions

    • The program covers endangered species across all the U.S. states. The country is split into eight regions to do this effectively. Each region has its own list of endangered species. The headquarters for the whole program is in Washington D.C.. Each region also has its own headquarters. Some regions only cover one or two states --- for example Region 7 is Alaska, while Region 8 (Pacific southwest) covers California and Nevada. Other regions cover a wider area. For example, Region 6 (mountain-prairie) is responsible for eight states: Utah, Colorado, Kansas, Nebraska, Wyoming, Montana, North Dakota and South Dakota.

    Types of Species

    • The program lists all types of animals, from mammals to reptiles. It deals with animals on land, in the sky and water dwellers. Examples of mammals include the blue whale, giant kangaroo rat and riparian brush rabbit.

Reptiles endangered include the blunt-nosed leopard lizard, alameda whipsnake and leatherback sea turtle. Other types of animals listed are fish, birds, amphibians, crustaceans and insects.

    Published List

    • The endangered species list for each region is available to the public. Each region has its own website and a comprehensive list of all endangered and threatened species in each state. It lists the scientific name for an animal, its endangerment status and the effort the program is taking in recovery and to preserve its habitat.
