How to Pitch a Tent on Frozen Ground

Camping is a well-loved method of recreation for many. For those who enjoy being around nature, there's nothing quite like sleeping out in the elements. Although most choose to camp in mild weather climates, there are those who enjoy this pastime year-round. For those who camp in cold weather climates, the problem of pitching a tent on frozen ground may come up. With the proper tent pegs, you can easily stake a tent in the ice or snow.

Instructions

    • 1

Find a clear spot for your tent, free of sharp objects or rocks. Set up your tent as normal.

    • 2

Compact any snow around the tent stake area by walking on it. Allow the compacted snow to harden for a few minutes.

    • 3

Stake down your tent with snow pegs. These are commonly made from titanium, a very strong metal. Drive these pegs into the frozen ground with a small sledge hammer. Drive them in until they are sticking out of the ground approximately a half-inch.

    • 4

Cover the top of the pegs in snow if available. This prevents the sun from heating the peg and freezing it into the ground.

    • 5

Remove the pegs by tapping them gently into the ground farther, or by stepping on them. This loosens the peg if it is frozen into the ground. Pull the peg free.
