Lettuce and Spinach
Both lettuce and spinach provide good food sources for tadpoles. Boil the lettuce and spinach and then drain the water. Chop up and place them on a tray to freeze them. When you're ready, tear off small pieces to feed your tadpoles. Feed the tadpoles twice a day on a regular schedule. Do not overfeed them. Place only enough food for them to eat in one hour in their habitat. Remove any uneaten lettuce and spinach as soon as possible to keep the water clean. Adjust the amount of food each day based upon the prior day's eating habits to avoid unused food in the water. Clean chlorine-free water is crucial to healthy tadpoles.
Algae and Plant Material
Tadpoles eat algae and decaying plant material. If you have another aquarium, you can use it as a source for these foods. Many aquariums have too much algae so the tadpoles can assist in getting rid of the excess.
Commercial Food
Finely ground goldfish food can be given to your tadpoles. This commercial food, which can be obtained at a pet store or any other location that sells pet products, should be given to the tadpoles twice a day. Another alternative is to purchase rabbit food pellets and crush them. The pellets provide a dietary supplement along with other food choices.
Egg Yolk
Hard-boil the egg yolk. It serves as a protein supplement for tadpoles. Feed it to them twice a week on a regular schedule, making sure the tadpoles receive the yolk in flakes. You will feed the tadpoles this food and the other listed items for the six to nine weeks necessary to make the transformation to a frog. The diet will change considerably when your tadpole grows up.
